June: The Season Begins

It’s been a busy month, and lots more is on the horizon as the summer theatre season gets into full swing!

Quote of the Month

“The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes.”

- Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles

Current & Upcoming at Gloucester Stage

It’s wonderful to be working on a full season of theatre once again! With one play wrapped and another already in tech, I’m loving the opportunity to compare contrasting productions and processes side-by-side. My position also includes coordinating a series of special events and new play readings coming up throughout the summer - stay tuned for more details on those.

Tiny Beautiful Reflection

The run of Tiny Beautiful Things has just wrapped with the end of June, and what a perfect way to get back to in-person productions. Cheryl Strayed’s writings which inspired the play are all about finding our shared humanity, and it has been so powerful for our artists as well as our audiences to experience actors making eye contact and sharing a space again while performing this touching text. It feels like the process went by fast, but there’s plenty more to come at GSC this season!

Something’s Afoot

If you’ve most missed seeing lots of fast-paced antics and quick changes of props and costumes while live theatre was on hiatus, then our next production is the one for you! Baskerville, a Sherlock Holmes-inspired romp featuring Holmes, Watson, and three brilliant actors bringing to life the remaining cast of dozens of characters, begins performances on July 2 and plays through July 25. It’s been a blast rehearsing with this talented cast, and I look forward to seeing the tech elements take shape throughout this week.

Exploring Cape Ann

Most of my time around Gloucester so far has been spent between our rehearsal and performance venues, but I’m making the most of any opportunity to explore this beautiful coastal area. A few highlights this month have included touring the medieval-inspired Hammond Castle, visiting the galleries along Rocky Neck, and spending an afternoon on the beach in nearby Ipswich.

A Crafty Closing

This is where I give a little monthly shoutout to the Etsy shop to which I contribute, Queequeg & Paulina Vintage (on Instagram @Queequeg_PaulinaCrafts). We offer an ever-changing selection of varied vintage finds, beautiful hand-knitted accessories, and other exciting crafted items. We currently have some adorable sets of greeting cards as well as lots of recently-updated vintage listings, and while they last each order is shipping with a complimentary hand-painted bookmark!
