May: A Change of Scene

Writing this month’s update from Massachusetts, where it’s delightful to be getting acquainted with new locations, artists, and projects!

Quote of the Month

“Be brave enough to break your own heart.”

- Cheryl Strayed

Current & Upcoming

I loved getting a chance to revisit the new work in development Letters from Lisette for the second round of The Growing Stage’s New Play-Reading Festival last weekend. It was great to see numerous ideas continuing to be explored in revisions since the first round, and to hear some insightful talkback discussion about the play’s further development. This wraps up this year’s NPRF events, but I look forward to following each of the finalist plays’ continuing journeys.

... And now, on to some new scenery and new productions!

Coming Soon at Gloucester Stage

As the Directing Apprentice at Gloucester Stage, I’m now diving into the first several plays of our outdoor season at Windhover Performing Arts Center. Rehearsals are underway for Tiny Beautiful Things, and it is incredible to be back in an in-person rehearsal room - albeit with plenty of Covid precautions still in place. We’ve had a wonderful start to a very collaborative process on this beautiful piece, based on Cheryl Strayed’s book of the same name and her original letters for the online advice column “Dear Sugar.” Tiny Beautiful Things begins previews on June 11 at Windhover.

After Tiny Beautiful Things, I will be assisting on each of the plays to follow throughout the season. During the summer, I look forward to switching gears to the madcap and very theatrical Sherlock Holmes romp Baskerville, and then the New England premier of Theresa Rebeck’s restaurant business-comedy Seared. I will also be helping to coordinate the NeverDark series of one-night events, including visiting solo performers and new play readings.

A Crafty Closing

This is where I give a little monthly shoutout to the Etsy shop to which I contribute, Queequeg & Paulina Vintage (on Instagram @Queequeg_PaulinaCrafts). We offer an ever-changing selection of varied vintage finds, beautiful hand-knitted accessories, and other exciting crafted items. We currently have some adorable sets of greeting cards and colorful lightweight knits, and as long as they last each order is shipping with a complimentary hand-painted bookmark!
